What's Actually Growing in Your Garbage Bin? (And Why It Matters)


Here's the uncomfortable part: your garbage bin is one of the warmest, wettest, food-filled boxes on your property, and that's exactly the environment bacteria are built to love. You take the bag out, so the problem feels solved. But the sticky film left on the walls and floor of the bin never leaves on its own. It just sits there in the sun, feeding whatever moves in.


We clean garbage, recycling, and compost bins across Montreal and Laval all summer, and we've seen the inside of a lot of bins. So let's talk plainly about what's living in there, and why "it's just the trash can" is a bad way to think about it.


Why bins are a perfect home for bacteria


Bacteria need three things to multiply: moisture, warmth, and food. A bin that's held bags of kitchen scraps, meat packaging, and yard waste offers all three at once. During a Montreal summer, the inside of a closed bin sitting in the sun can get significantly hotter than the air around it, and heat speeds bacterial growth up dramatically.


Research on household waste storage backs this up. A 2024 study of household garbage rooms found that waste components act as reservoirs for pathogens, which then spread into the surrounding air as bioaerosols. In other words, the germs don't politely stay at the bottom of the bin.


The three names worth knowing


You don't need a microbiology degree to care about these three. They're common, they're associated with food waste, and they can make people sick.


Salmonella. Associated with raw meat, poultry, and egg waste, all things that end up in your bin. Peer-reviewed research has found Salmonella surviving for weeks to months in compost and biowaste under the right conditions. In people, Salmonella infection typically causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.


E. coli. Certain strains, like O157:H7, are genuinely nasty. Studies of composted waste have documented E. coli surviving for extended periods in damp organic matter. Your bin's residue is exactly that: damp organic matter.


Listeria. Listeria monocytogenes keeps growing in cold, damp conditions that stop many other bacteria. The shaded, wet bottom of a bin suits it fine, and it's one of the pathogens researchers track when studying how germs move from waste into the wider environment.


None of this means your bin will make you sick tomorrow. It means the conditions that let these bacteria thrive are the same conditions your uncleaned bin creates every single week.


It's not just germs, it's everything that follows


Bacteria are the start of the chain, not the end of it. That bacterial film is what produces the smell. The smell is what attracts flies. The flies lay eggs, and the eggs become maggots. So the "gross bin" problem people notice, the stink and the pests, usually traces straight back to the invisible layer of bacteria you can't see.


What you can do to slow it down


You can't fully sterilize a wheelie bin with what's under your sink, but a few habits genuinely keep the buildup in check between deep cleans:


Bag and tie all waste, especially meat, fish, and produce scraps, so less liquid and residue ends up coating the walls.

Rinse and dry after each pickup. A quick hose-out, then letting the bin dry in the sun, removes a lot of the film that bacteria and flies feed on.

Sprinkle a little baking soda in the bottom to absorb moisture and odour between cleans.

Keep the bin in the shade, not baking in direct sun, since heat speeds up bacterial growth and smell.


These slow the problem down. What they don't do is remove the stuck-on film or kill the bacteria already living in it, which is the part that actually matters.


What actually resets it


Rinsing and baking soda buy you time, but they don't disinfect, and they don't lift the baked-on residue that's feeding everything. To truly reset a bin you have to break that film down and kill the bacteria in it.

Your bin isn't dirty because you're doing anything wrong. It's dirty because that's what bins do. The film builds up whether you notice it or not. The only question is whether it gets reset periodically or gets left to grow all season.
